Almost every one I meet has this question; some ask out loud while the majority think it quietly. Well, we are SMAT MARKETING, a digital marketing agency in Uganda NOT “SMART” MARKETING and today I’ll tell you the reason.
How did you choose your business name?
When you start a business, the idea of exactly what your business will be comes first. Second is deciding what the name of your business will be. Some people turn to their childhood for inspiration or a beloved person, item or animal. For others, it could be a made up word that they dream up one night and feel it has the right ring to it.
For us, our name was born out of how our first few clients started their conversation with us.
When I started out, I was simply a guy with ideas who was helping friends figure out certain aspects of marketing for their businesses. This was even before I ever got the core principles of marketing in check (my first university degree wasn’t even in marketing) and my Twitter bio says “autodidact” for a reason. Anyway, that’s a story for another day…
At the time, the people who called, E-mailed or met with me through referrals used to start the conversation with “so & so asked me to see you about…” For example, “Hi, I’m Felix, Carol told me to see you about Website design.” or “Hi, I’m Roger, Mary told me to see you about social media.”
One day it dawned on me that about 1 out of 3 people always begun their business conversation with me the same way. As I met more people and begun to enjoy my work more, I finally started secretly referring to myself as “the guy they come to see about marketing” the same way you would “see your optician about your eyes.”
Eventually I begun asking people to “See Me About This” problem (marketing, advertising, brand strategy, social media) after our initial encounters.
So basically, “SMAT” stands for “See Me About This.” Given that we only solve one core business problem (Marketing) we decided to let it fly as “SMAT Marketing”
Over the years, the brand has obviously outgrown me as an individual so “Me” doesn’t necessarily mean Phillip Buyondo but the Company.
There you have it, “SMAT” isn’t a mispelt version of “smart.” It is actually an acronym that tells a story of where we begun as a company
